Leadership Transitions -- Empower Others to Recommit

It's the season of transition. Many leadership teams are ending their terms of service while others are preparing to jump into their new roles. It's an emotional time.

You've heard these common phrases -- I've put in my time as an officer. I can't wait to turn over this office. I love this office and don't want to give it up.

Both situations probably sound familiar and both deserve care to ease the situation. Here's a helpful suggestion or model to lead your leadership team and organization through a healthy transition. The number one objective is:

Recommit to the Big Picture. Whether the leadership team has one month or several months remaining to serve, this is a critical time to refocus. Most teams experience the magical realization that they can't do it all in their short term of service. The process of servant leadership also includes realizing what can be done and what should be done. Accomplishing all of the lofty aspirations and goals from the start of their year of service may seem near impossible. This is often a source of defeat for many leadership teams. I think that being able to communicate with people is power.

One of my main goals on the planet is to encourage people to empower themselves.
    --Oprah Winfrey

As a mentor you play a crucial role in affirming the officer's can-do attitude and keeping the team focused. You can make a huge difference by asking the leadership team a few simple questions. What have we accomplished so far? What have been our biggest challenges? What is THE most important thing for us to accomplish? Answering these three short questions can help recommit the leadership team, affirm the positive things they've accomplished and focus their energy on the Big Picture. Empowering others is what you do best!
